Dracula Summary | Chapter 1 Summary

Jonathan Harker leaves Munich on his journey to Transylvania to conduct business for Count Dracula. He describes the research he conducted previously to learn about the history, customs and geography of the region he is traveling to. On the second night of his journey, he stays at inn where the landlord and his wife express fear for Harker's safety. The wife begs Harker not to travel the coming night because it is the eve of St. George's Day, when "all evil things in the world will have their sway." Because he is determined to go, she presents him with a crucifix that she says will protect him. Harker is both bemused and irritated by what he views as the silly superstitions of these peasants.

On the last leg of Harker's trek he meets Dracula's driver, who will convey him to the Count's castle. The driver is a strange and ominous character. As the coach speeds along, dogs howl, and the horses rear up in fright. The driver seems to have an extraordinary power over the animals as he soothes them several times along the way. Wolves howl in the distance, and weird blue flames flicker along the road. The driver dismounts and disappears into the darkness. In his absence, the wolves surround the coach, and Harker fears for his life. Suddenly, the driver reappears and miraculously commands the wolves to disperse. Although relieved, Harker is frightened by these mysterious happenings. The coach continues on in the darkness, and the ride seems interminable. Finally, they reach their destination, pulling into the courtyard of a huge ruined castle.
