British teenager, Georgia Nicolson, struggles to cope with her family and school. She worries about her body and takes drastic measures. Through a series of adventures, she and her best friend, Jas, find love with two brothers. She thinks her life is perfect, until her mother announces that they are leaving for another country.

Fourteen-year-old Georgia Nicolson tells about a year of her life in her diary. She lives in England with her parents and three-year-old sister Libby. She also has a wildcat named Angus who she got in Scotland on vacation. Her best friend Jas likes a boy named Tom who works in a supermarket so Georgia and Jas go to see him. While talking to Tom, they see Tom's older brother Robbie who Georgia falls for. Tom and Robbie's parents own the store. The new school year starts for Georgia and her friends. Georgia visits a seventeen-year-old boy named Peter who teaches girls how to kiss. After the kissing lesson, Georgia meets with Peter at a party. At the party, they kiss and fall in front of Robbie and his date Lindsay. Georgia grows tired of Peter and gets Jas to break up with him for her. Jas and Tom go to Robbie's band's show, and Jas socializing with Lindsay there makes Georgia mad. However, Georgia and Jas make up. At a neighborhood bonfire, Georgia meets Mark.

When Jas asks if she should break up with Tom, Georgia says yes so she does. Due to a layoff, Georgia's father plans to go to New Zealand for work. Robbie's band plays at the school Christmas dance, and Georgia goes with Mark. Mark causes a fight. Georgia decides to break up with him, but he breaks up with her first.

Meanwhile, Jas is out of school. Georgia spends Christmas with her family, and her father leaves for New Zealand at the end of the year. Georgia visits Jas who is depressed and cheers her up. Georgia's mother wants to redecorate so a builder named Jem visits the house. Georgia and her mother like him. Georgia gets mad at Jas for accepting an invitation to coffee from Robbie. Georgia sees Jem and her mother getting along and thinks they are having an affair. Angry, Georgia watches Jas go off with Robbie. Georgia is relieved to hear from her friend Rosie that Robbie only wanted to talk about Tom. Jas and Georgia make up. Georgia and Jas spy on Lindsay and see her kiss Robbie. Georgia tries to downplay it. Georgia goes to Robbie's concert, and he kisses her and promises to call. Lindsay warns her away from Robbie, but Robbie breaks up with Lindsay anyway. Robbie tells Georgia he likes her, but she is too young. Georgia finds out her mother loves her father and not Jem. Angus is missing, but Robbie finds him. Robbie tells Georgia they can date in secret. Georgia is happy, until her mother tells her they are going to New Zealand.
